When I first came upon this quote, I thought it was a humorous, albeit exaggerated, view of writers.  After embarking on my own writing journey, I've found every nuance of Theroux's words to be true.  But what I believe he failed to mention is that despite the madness and frustrations an author faces, the success of completing a piece of writing is worth the agony.
